Day 2- grade 8 and 9

The children in grade 9 are also very scripted, again I walked in grade 9 with a serious look on my face because I wanted to establish respect and not friendship. I walk in ready to introduce myself and they start yelling, "Rose, its Rose"- they knew me from opening ceremony and from their other friends. I was melting but Mary Beth and I stuck to the plans and said to them,

"today you will have a little exam" (they do not understand quiz)- we handed out a sheet that was 4 pages long and proceeded, "we want to know if your English is good, if you do really well, you will stay in grade 9- if you do ok, you will go to grade 8 and if you do bad, you will go to grade 7. you will have 3 minutes to complete; does everyone understand...ok good...begin.

Thirty seconds later we say, 1 minute left and one minute later, we say ok stop! We then tell them that this is not an exam but sometimes they will have "little exam"--- a quiz! They breathe a sigh of relief and start grinning. We split the class in half, Mary Beth took her group upstairs and I stayed in the room.

I taught another grade 8 class and at the end of class a child asked me to write my name in her book, so I did to help her with the spelling. Then there was a line of children waiting for me to sign my name. So now I have a quota- 10 per day, see you tomorrow. I had no clue they would all line up to get me to sign my name in their book, aren't they great?

After class, a girl named Carly came up to me and said, "pleased to meet you- you are Rose, right?- I affirmed she then asked me if I was on facebook because she wanted to be my friend. I do not have a facebook page but if I did....lol..then she asked if I was going to teach her class and looked disappointed when I told her no.

Another day..two words....great success
