The Week of Superlatives

While my dad came to visit me, we had a week of superlatives (I think that's what its called)- we went to the Yangtze River Park (one of the longest rivers in the world- third I think); we saw the Three Gorges Dam- the largest hydroelectric power station in the world; we saw the most beautiful manmade scenery I have ever seen. An Emperor built a house for his mother called the Summer Palace. Everything is manmade; on the tour we were like "wow look at those mountains" and our tour guide responded "if you push it, it will fall down" and then we went to Beijing to see the Great Wall which required the longest train ride my dad and I had ever taken- to get there.

OK so I had tons of pics from Beijing and the Great Wall and all that BUT there is a virus on my flash drive so I will try to redeem them argghhh

Anyways, while in Beijing I went to the Pearl Market and one bad rumor led to upheaval. One sales lady told another that I was Jennifer Hudson; so she had people crowding around me, I'm like c'mon people apart from the fact that we are both black, do I really look like Jennifer Hudson? My students claim that I look like Raven Simone and Beyonce so...who knows- I disagree

Trains and Subways

Its never too early to take pictures. The train ride was 19 hours- at this time we just woke up and still have 5 hours to go
These ladies were in the cabins with Mary and Jennifer. I took this picture 4 times and the old lady was like, "you need to take it again my hair doesn't look right!"
One of my new favorite card games is translated to "Beat the Landlord"- we played Landlord with this guy
I was about to go back to my cabin and after being forced by the older lady to eat pumpkin seeds; she said you cant leave; I will get the magician to come. So this guy started doing some really cool tricks. He did some card games that were just mind provoking
Then he did a trick with a piece of string and he told me to cut the string so I cut it in half; he rolled it up, put it in his hand and made it come back to one piece. I don't believe in magic but that thing was cool!
I think he is the husband of the older lady- another random personAfter we finally finished our long journey, we took a taxi to the hotel, checked in, drop off our bags, showered and hit the streets again.

This is the Pearl Market where you can buy..pearls obviously but a number of other items

My dad and I in the subway
Mary, Jennifer and I in the subway
These two men were in my cabin on the train and I had a pretty good plan. Don't speak any Chinese and no one will talk to you. He asked me if I spoke chinese and I told him no- how are you going to ask me in chinese if I speak chinese! My dad lay on his bed and they started taking pictures of him like we wouldn't notice. So then he tried to take a picture of me but since my bed was higher it would be more obvious, so he asked me. I told him that he could take a picture of me if he paid 150. He laughed and said no, he will just take the picture and I said, no I don't want to, to which he responds "its OK, I will take the picture"- How is it OK if I am telling you I don't want to. So anyways, he took about 3 pictures and asked me my name. So I told him my chinese name and then he asked me to write it. I said "no, you write it".
I wanted to go to sleep which was why I didn't initiate any conversations, even when my eyes were closed they still spoke to me, even when I told them I didn't speak enough chinese, they still pursued a conversation. So since I couldn't sleep, I started talking to them.
They also had friends in other cabins so the friends would come over and just push my dad's feet out of the way and sit on his bed so that they could face each other! I don't know if they don't say excuse because they think he won't understand or because they just don't care. They would just move his foot and sit down. I thought it was quite hilarious.

The Three Gorges Dam

Plan for the day: visit the largest hydroelectrical power station in the world! On my way there, I was pretty psyched about going; when I got there I was like "oh, its a lot of water!" I mean I've never been one for engineering, but some things I can appreciate but I have no clue what I was looking at and why its a tourist attraction as opposed to just something in the "current news" section which should eventually get transferred to a history book, lol- sorry... I took nice pics though - of the parks and flowers, the dam- still not sure if I saw it lol

My dad went to take this picture and people just started crowding around- people here are very funny to say the least

Welcome Dinner

Welcome dinner for my dad with the foreign teachers, supervisor and leaders.Susie presents a gift to Dad
My supervisor presented another gift
The chef and cooks insisted they have a picture

The characters on the plate are 欢迎您 Huan Ying Nin- meaning "We Welcome You"
Really? This is for me?

MY Dad's Visit to China

So after travelling for about 20 hours, my dad finally got to my neck of the woods. Normally I take a taxi from the airport and we just drive for a while, this time the driver decided to take a ferry- so my dad took probably every mode of transportation in the last day. The ferry is much faster, its only 10 minutes across the water and its a great view along the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang). And this is our taxi driver, he is the craziest driver I have ever seen. Jingjing and I went by taxi to the airport and I asked her if she told him we were in a hurry and she responded negatively. He sped the entire way and if that weren't bad enough, he drove on the wrong side of the road even when cars were approaching. Then he would blow the other cars as if they were wrong; he crossed at merging sections, solid lines, double solids, he didn't care - he just had a need for speed. He was oblivious to the size of trucks and would bypass three trucks at a time, he was just a maniac--- but a pretty nice guy.
This is the taxi on the ferry

I danced with a group of older people and we were just having a ball!
Picture of the river lighted up at night
My dad and I were playing ping pong and I called over a student to challenge him; they were just smashing like crazy- all the students were grouped up watching

At night we went to a coffee house which is ridiculously expensive and the cost of a cup of tea is your lunch money for three days! :) It was well worth it though

In Chang Jiang Park, home of the second largest body of water (Yangtze River)
I seemed to have become fascinated with nature so it is imperative that we take this picture on a rock
My friend Yuan Mao came with us to the park

In the Newspaper

Mary, Jennifer and I were invited to a grand opening ceremony for an orange orchard. We decided to attend and we had to get up at the crack of dawn to be at the ceremony for 9am. We met my supervisor at the gate at 7am and the Minister of Agricultural Development picked us up. We went to have breakfast and then set out to the orange orchard. While there we took ridiculous amount of pictures because there were alot of reporters and newspapers there.

There was an orange eating competition and in good faith we joined and didnt win of course. I get a text message today; we were in the newspaper. Here is the link:

Home Work from Kaylee

So my student decided that I need to do some home work; first find her another english name and the she thinks I need to know some songs, so I had to do research to find a song that she vaguely remembered. Here is the video and the lyrics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crpX25AuEV4

Chorus*
I'm a big big girl
In a big big world
It's not a big big thing if u leave me
But I do do feel
That I do do will
Miss u much
Miss u much

*V1*
I can see the first leafs falling
It's all yellow and nice
It's so very cold outside
Like the way I'm feeling inside

*Chorus*
I'm a big big girl
In a big big world
It's not a big big thing if u leave me
But I do do feel
That I do do will
Miss u much
Miss u much

*V2*
Outside it's no raining
And tears are falling from my eyes
Why did it have to happen
Why did it all have to end

*Chorus*
I'm a big big girl
In a big big world
It's not a big big thing if u leave me
But I do do feel
That I do do will
Miss u much
Miss u much

*V3*
I have your arms around me
Warm like fire
But when I open my eyes......
Your gone

*Chorus*
I'm a big big girl
In a big big world
It's not a big big thing if u leave me
But I do do feel
That I do do will
Miss u much
Miss u much

*Repeat Chorus*

I'm a big big girl
In a big big world
It's not a big big thing
If u leave me
But I do
Feel I will
Miss u much
miss u much

Relaxation

My students had exams for the past 3 days; the foreign teachers didn't work on Monday and Tuesday because we had to grade papers. We finished grading all the papers on Monday so we just relaxed on Tuesday and then I went latin dancing. Today after our first class back, we went to get facials. Now, I'm relaxed.

I'm Black!

My students often visit me unannounced so yesterday 5 of them came to see me. They told me that I look Chinese especially because of my eyes. So I said to them I don't look Chinese and y'all are yellow. So Mya (who shares my birthday) rolls up her sleeve and says "No, I'm black!"
See black spot on her arm
